The blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, is used to rejuvenate the lower and/or upper eyelids by:
- Eliminating excess skin
- Reducing or readjusting fat deposits
- Correcting weakened muscle tissue
Enhancing Facial Features With Eyelid Surgery
There are multiple variations on the blepharoplasty technique, so we’ll need to carefully plan out your procedure. That will first involve meeting with a board-certified oculofacial plastic surgeon like Dr. Charles Anthony II at his St. Petersburg, Florida, office: Anthony Aesthetics.
He will perform a complete examination of your eyes and surrounding facial features in order to map out a personalized treatment plan to match your cosmetic goals. This could include the upper or lower blepharoplasty, or both.
Upper Eyelid Lift
An upper blepharoplasty can be done on one or both upper eyelids. Droopy upper eyelids frequently occur because of loose, aging skin but can also result from weakened levator muscles (a condition known as ptosis). Besides the obvious facial aesthetic problems, drooping upper eyelids can end up partially blocking a patient’s field of vision, as well.
During upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Anthony is able to remove excess skin and tighten the levator muscle for a more “alert” look. This is done utilizing an incision that is well hidden within the crease of the upper eyelid.
Lower Eyelid Lift
Bags under the eyes are caused by extra skin tissue and sometimes fat herniation (bulging). To create a less “tired,” more youthful appearance, Dr. Anthony will excise unnecessary skin and remove or redrape the underlying fat. Depending on the cause of your symptoms, the lower eyelid lift incision is made either along the outside crease or on the inside of the eyelid.
How Long Will It Take To Enjoy My Results?
Patients who carefully follow Dr. Anthony’s post-operative instructions typically experience full results about one to three months after surgery. Blepharoplasties are designed to be permanent, but some patients may eventually need a follow-up treatment depending on their rate of skin aging.
Can I Combine A Blepharoplasty With Other Procedures?
To experience the full impact of blepharoplasty surgery, Dr. Anthony often recommends combining it with other cosmetic procedures for total facial harmony. For example, some patients may be good candidates for an upper blepharoplasty but have hollows, rather than bags, under the lower eyelids. In these instances, dermal fillers can be administered to add volume to the under-eyes (in coordination with upper eyelid surgery) for comprehensive improvements.
Similarly, pairing a blepharoplasty with a brow lift is frequently a smart idea. This often complementary procedure is used to raise sagging eyebrows and reduce horizontal forehead lines, even further enhancing the appearance of the upper face.
