How Does Botox Work?
Also known as botulinum toxin type A, Botox is an FDA-approved injectable neuromodulator product derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. To understand how Botox works, it’s important to first understand how fine age lines appear.
The skin wrinkles as a result of overworked facial muscles. When your facial muscles contract into the same positions over and over again, it becomes harder for them to relax back to an at-rest position. This creates age lines in the overlying skin.
When Botox is injected, it blocks the nerve impulses to these overworked facial muscles. This temporarily relaxes these muscles, letting them lie flat, thus allowing the skin above them to remain smooth. This results in a more youthful-looking appearance.
What Happens During a Botox Session?
Botox injections are not complicated and can be performed in a relatively short amount of time. There is typically no need for the administration of any kind of anesthetic.
Botox will be injected into the muscles using a very small needle. The number of Botox injections needed depends on the size of the area being treated, the severity of the targeted wrinkle, and the results the patient wants to achieve.
What to Expect After a Botox Session
Botox injections are minimally invasive and require no downtime. Patients can go right back to their day after the session.
After receiving botulinum toxin injections, it’s important to avoid massaging or rubbing the treated areas. It is recommended to avoid exercise and applying makeup for 12 hours.
Some patients start to see the results of Botox injection within only three days, although maximum effect is not achieved for two weeks. Depending on the area treated and the total number of injections, its effects can last several months.
